저작권 · 원작은 기원전 8세기 무렵의 고대 작품으로, 대한민국·미국·유럽연합 모두에서 퍼블릭도메인이다. 저본인 머리 판(1919)은 미국에서 1930년 이전 출판물로 보호기간이 끝났고, 엮은이 머리(1866~1940)가 세상을 떠난 지 70년이 지나 한국에서도 보호기간이 끝났다. 대조본인 버틀러(Samuel Butler, 1835~1902)의 영역(1900)도 두 나라 모두에서 보호기간이 끝났다.
