About the book
An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations opens in a pin factory, where the division of labour multiplies what ten workers can make, and moves outward to money, prices, wages, profit, and rent, to the accumulation of capital, to the history of European towns and agriculture, to a long critique of the mercantile system, and finally to what the sovereign must pay for and how it should be raised.
This is the complete text of Smith’s revised edition, including the chapters he added in 1784, with his own notes in braces and his price tables. It is divided into pages exactly as our complete Korean translation is, so the two can be read side by side. Fifteen small errors of transcription are corrected.
Highlights
- It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.
- led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention.
