About the book
In the winter of 1801 Mr. Lockwood, a London gentleman in search of solitude, rents Thrushcross Grange and calls on his landlord, Heathcliff, at the farmhouse of Wuthering Heights high on the moor. Snowed in for a night, he finds three names scratched on a window ledge and dreams of a child’s cold hand at the glass, begging to be let in. Back at the Grange, the housekeeper Nelly Dean tells him the history of the two houses: the dark foundling Mr. Earnshaw brought home from Liverpool, the girl Catherine who ran wild with him on the moors, her marriage to Edgar Linton, and the long revenge Heathcliff took when he came back.
This is the complete text of the first edition, published by Thomas Cautley Newby in 1847 under the name Ellis Bell. Its spelling and punctuation, including Joseph’s Yorkshire speech, are kept as printed, and nothing has been corrected or added. Our complete Korean translation was made from the same text, chapter for chapter.
