Ether Library · one scene from a classic, animated
The bird fights its way out of the egg
“The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Whoever would be born must destroy a world. The bird flies to God. The name of the god is Abraxas.”
Hermann Hesse, Demian (1919), chapter 5 (Ether Library edition)
Sinclair paints a sparrowhawk with a golden head and sends it to Demian. Weeks later a slip of paper turns up in his schoolbook. These five sentences are the answer.
This is that answer in 46 seconds: an egg in a dark forest cracks, the bird breaks out and opens its wings, and the world that was the egg, the night sky itself, shatters and falls away. The book never shows this scene; it lives only in the painting and the note.
No video software was used. The browser paints every frame: the dawn sky on the graphics chip, the egg and the bird in cel color and ink at 12 drawings a second. The cracking shell and the wingbeats are code too. Claude (Anthropic) made the pictures and sound; the editorial calls were made by a person.
