Editor’s Note
This is the complete text of Pride and Prejudice. It is set from a public-domain transcription of the edition published in London by George Allen in 1894 (with illustrations by Hugh Thomson and a preface by George Saintsbury), which reprints the standard text descended from the first edition of 1813. It has not been collated against the first edition; differences between the two are of spelling, punctuation, and occasional wording, not of substance.
The first edition appeared in three volumes, each with its own chapter numbers. Like its source, this edition numbers the chapters continuously from I to LXI; the second volume of 1813 begins at Chapter XXIV, the third at Chapter XLIII. Austen’s spelling and punctuation (neighbourhood, endeavour, colour) and her italics for emphasis are kept, and each paragraph of the source is one paragraph here. Our Korean translation divides three long letters into several paragraphs for ease of reading; this English edition does not.
Removed from the source: the transcription’s header and license, the 1894 title page, Saintsbury’s preface, the list of illustrations and the illustrations themselves, and the printer’s imprint. We have made no corrections.
