Chapter 54

善建者不拔，善抱者不脫，子孫以祭祀不輟。
修之於身，其德乃真；
修之於家，其德乃餘；
修之於鄉，其德乃長；
修之於國，其德乃豐；
修之於天下，其德乃普。
故以身觀身，以家觀家，以鄉觀鄉，以國觀國，以天下觀天下。
吾何以知天下然哉？
以此。

What is well planted is not uprooted, what is well held does not slip away, and sons and grandsons will offer sacrifice without end.
Cultivate it in the self, and its virtue is genuine;
cultivate it in the family, and its virtue is abundant;
cultivate it in the village, and its virtue lasts;
cultivate it in the state, and its virtue flourishes;
cultivate it in the world, and its virtue is everywhere.
So look at the self through the self, at the family through the family, at the village through the village, at the state through the state, at the world through the world.
How do I know the world is so?
By this.
